The fates and fortunes of the candidates featured in The 1990 Election.

Rudy Boswitch
Rudy Boschwitz
(R) - The two-term senator lost his seat to Paul Wellstone in 1990, lost to Wellstone again in 1996 and returned to his business interests.


Arne Carlson
Arne Carlson
(R) - Elected Governor in 1990 and after a rocky start, gained such popularity that though not the party's endorsed candidate, easily won reelection in 1994. He retired from politics after his second term and entered the financial sector.

Sharon ClarkSharon Clark (R) - Grunseth's running mate, Sharon Clark, sued to remain on the ballot as the IR candidate for lieutenant governor after Grunseth dropped out. The court ruled that even though Clark won in the primary, Carlson could name his own running mate (Joanell Dyrstad).

Durning the Carlson administration, Clark was named Deputy Agriculture Commisioner and also appointed to the board of the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth.

(R) - Left politics and moved to Australia.

 


Mike Hatch
Mike Hatch
(D) - Lost the primary in 1990, ran for governor in 1994, again losing in the primary. He was elected State Attorney General in 1998 and again in 2002.

In 2006, he once more ran for governor, winning the primary, but ultimately losing to incumbent Tim Pawlenty. Hatch is now in private practice.

Rudy Perpich
Rudy Perpich
(D) - Became governor in 1976 when Gov. Wendell Anderson resigned to appoint himself Senator, filling the seat vacated by newly-elected vice president Walter Mondale.

Perpich lost in 1978, but won in 1982 and again in 1986 thereby becoming the longest serving governor in state history. After his defeat in 1990, Perpich spent three years in Europe as a business consultant before returning in to Minnesota. He died of cancer in 1995.

Paul Wellstone

(D) - The Carlton College professor entered state politics In 1982 by running for State Auditor, losing to Arne Carlson. In 1988, he was the Minnesota campaign manager for Jesse Jackson's presidential bid.

Two years later, in 1990, Wellstone defeated incumbent Senator Rudy Boschwitz. Wellstone was reelected to the US Senate in 1996 and was campaigning for a third term in 2002 when, eleven days before the election, the light plane in which he was traveling crashed, killing all on board including his wife Sheila and daughter Marcia.

Walter Mondale, hastily drafted to take Wellstone's spot on the ballot, lost to Norm Coleman.
